Thanksgiving Sides Reign Supreme: Discover America’s Favorite Choices

Thanksgiving table with favorite side dishes and turkey, festive decor.

Thanksgiving's Surprising Star: The Side Dishes

As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us feel the anticipation of a well-prepared meal, but here’s the twist: it turns out that sides are taking center stage! A recent survey from Campbell's State of the Sides Report revealed that 63% of Americans prefer side dishes over the traditional turkey. That's an increase from 56% last year, signaling a shift in Thanksgiving dining preferences.

All About the Sides: Historical Insights

The tradition of Thanksgiving has deep roots, often centered around fellowship, gratitude, and hearty meals. While turkey has long been symbolized as the main event, it seems that Americans are ready to re-evaluate this tradition. In fact, 47% of respondents to Campbell's poll confessed they would happily celebrate a Thanksgiving solely filled with sides!

America’s Favorite Side Dishes Revealed

Noteworthy mentions from the survey include macaroni and cheese, which emerged as a favorite for a whopping 50% of respondents, particularly resonating with the younger Gen Z demographic. Concurrently, green bean casserole remains a staple on over half of Thanksgiving tables, especially in the Midwest, marking its cultural significance as a holiday classic.

The Unwavering Popularity of Stuffing

For the second consecutive year, stuffing has clinched the title of the most beloved Thanksgiving side. Dominating the tastes of 42 states, it showcases the nostalgic link between holiday meals and family traditions. The warming blend of bread, herbs, and spices offers comfort and nostalgia, resulting in its everlasting potential to make or break a holiday table.

Cooking Sides: A Heartfelt Approach

Interestingly, an impressive 66% of Americans find joy in preparing sides, favoring the creative process over cooking the turkey. Cooking, after all, is not just about the food but about love and connection. A significant 81% of poll participants agreed that the act of preparing meals is how they express love for family and friends, reiterating the emotional ties associated with Thanksgiving meals.

Exploring the Potential for New Traditions

While classics like stuffing and mashed potatoes will always hold a cherished place, this survey illuminates the openness to evolving Thanksgiving traditions. Many individuals are enthusiastic about experimenting with new dishes alongside traditional favorites. Festive options like Gnocchi Green Bean Casserole or Croissant Stuffing can offer fresh takes that might just become the next holiday staple.

Simplifying Holiday Preparations

If planning and preparation feel daunting, here's a tip: focus your efforts on the sides. They can often be prepared ahead of time, allowing hosts to indulge in the festive spirit rather than stress over the main dish. With the right mix of classics and new trends, you can create a memorable Thanksgiving feast that resonates with all your guests.
