Reflecting on a Year of One Health and Community Impact
As my term as AVMA president concludes, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey this past year has provided. Engaging with peers from various backgrounds and locations has highlighted an essential truth: One Health and animal welfare are pivotal to the future of veterinary medicine. These themes resonate deeply because they intertwine the well-being of humans, animals, and the environment.
The Role of Veterinarians in Public Health
The World Health Organization and the World Organisation for Animal Health offer staggering statistics: over 60% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic, meaning they jump from animals to humans. This threatens public health globally. It is imperative for veterinarians to lead in addressing this crisis. Our role transcends treatment; it encompasses preventive measures to curb potential outbreaks before they manifest. As we tackle issues from African swine fever to avian influenza, our vigilance plays a critical part in safeguarding human health and food security.
Understanding Our Profession
But what does it mean to be a veterinarian? It’s about more than clinical skills or academic credentials. We bring a unique blend of knowledge, empathy, and adaptability to the table. Every interaction requires us to assess the whole picture—understanding the animal, its environment, and the human context.
A Call for Unity Among Veterinarians
As I step down, I call on every AVMA member to recognize the importance of our collective voice. Our association thrives through each member’s engagement. It is not solely about leadership; it is about unity and representation. Together, we can advocate for our profession and amplify our commitment to animal and public health.
